I was born on May 17, 1950 in Baytown, Texas, the third son of Joe L. and Mildred Franklin. My father had a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Texas and my mother graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Rice Institute (now Rice University). My father worked as a research chemist all his life, first with the Humble Oil and Refining Company and later as the Robert A. Welch Professor of Chemistry at Rice University in Houston. He was one of the pioneers of the field of Mass Spectrometry. I graduated from the University of Houston with a Business major in 1977 and from the University of Houston Law School in 1980. I served as Associate Editor and Executive Editor of Houston Law Review, and received three awards for legal research and writing while in law school. After graduation I served for five years as Adjunct Professor of legal research and writing at the University of Houston Law School. I practiced law with the firm of Nelson & Mallett, P.C. from 1980-85 before starting my own firm, Robert A. Franklin & Associates in 1985. My law practice was primarily in the area of civil litigation representing individuals in personal injury, products liability and admiralty cases in both state and federal courts. Most recently, I spent three years doing asbestos-related litigation. I have published a variety of writing including poetry, journalism, essays and a law review article. Before attending the University of Houston, I was part owner of a folk music club in Houston which served as a beginning venue for such artists as Lyle Lovett, Lucinda Williams, Nancy Griffith, Eric Taylor and Townes Van Zandt. From 1990-92, my wife and I lived in Antigua, Guatemala where I wrote poetry and a novel. From 2000-2002, I served as national Treasurer of the Green Party of the United States. In 2006 I retired from law practice to devote my full time to writing and advocacy concerning issues of fathers" and men"s rights. I have been happily married since 1989. My wife is a clay artist. In 2006 we moved from Houston to Utopia, Texas in the scenic hill country where we live with our three Australian Shepherds. She makes art and I write. Life is grand.
